Two Pivotal Events That Altered the Course of Modern Korean History in 1979
1. The October 26 Incident (10·26 사건, 1979)
Overview & Development:
Kim Jae-gyu, Director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA), assassinated President Park Chung-hee and Chief Presidential Security Service Cha Ji-cheol inside a government safehouse in Gungjeong-dong, Seoul. Accompanying Army Chief of Staff General Jeong Seung-hwa, Kim rushed to the Army Headquarters in an attempt to seize control of the situation. However, he was arrested by the Military Police just hours later.
Historical Impact:
Following Kim's arrest, the government declared nationwide emergency martial law, appointing General Jeong Seung-hwa as the Martial Law Commander. This assassination brought a sudden end to Park Chung-hee's 18-year authoritarian rule and effectively dismantled the Fourth Republic's Yushin Regime.
2. The December 12 Military Insurrection (12·12 군사반란, 1979)
Overview & Development:
Amidst the volatile power vacuum left by the October 26 assassination, Major General Chun Doo-hwan—the Defense Security Commander who was appointed Chief of the Joint Investigation Headquarters—orchestrated an internal military coup. Leading the "New Military" faction centered around Hanahoe (an illicit private clique within the armed forces), Chun forcefully abducted Martial Law Commander General Jeong Seung-hwa and mobilized frontline troops into Seoul and the surrounding capital region without presidential authorization.
Historical Impact:
By executing this armed mutiny, the New Military faction completely seized control of South Korea's military command structure. This illicit seizure of power served as the direct catalyst for the formal establishment of Chun Doo-hwan's authoritarian military regime in September 1980.
